Walltown Byre has been transformed into a fabulous retreat from a cattle barn dating from the 17th century, with contemporary art and modern design.  The floor to ceiling windows look out over the glorious Northumbrian countryside.

Owner Sabina likes bright colours and her influence can be seen throughout the property from the red kitchen to the oversized wall hanging.

The property boasts a large cinema room with a ping pong table and even an electric piano.  Outside is a hot-tub in which to relax and enjoy the view, and in Summer, a barbeque is provided.  The perfect place to stay for families or a group of friends.

The open plan kitchen, sitting room and dining room (which can seat up to 12) is full of colourful art and curios collected from around the world. It’s ideal for entertaining or simply relaxing by the  fire and taking in the spectacular views which can be seen if you look past the Byre’s beautiful original stone arches through the floor to ceiling windows.

Each of the three bedrooms is full of character. The first is known as the “Elephant Room” with ornate gold wallpaper and the upholstery on the queen-sized bed, the “Green Room has two twin beds (that can be made into a king-sized bed) and brings in a lot of the colours from the surrounding countryside, and the “Candy Cane Room” is often a favourite with guests with bright red and white striped wallpaper and carpet (this also has two twin beds that can be converted into a king-sized bed). All three of the bedrooms have an ensuite bathroom and beautiful views from the windows.

One of the Byer’s highlights is undoubtedly the hot-tub where you warm up and enjoy a glass of wine after a day of walking along Hadrian’s Wall while looking over the Fell.

The party barn, which is attached to the Byre, is a haven for kids and adults who haven’t quite grown up yet. It has a projector, sound system, piano and ping pong table. The original arrow slit windows have been fitted with LED coloured lights which can be synced to music in case you want to follow up a day of walking with some dancing!

There is also a utility room for guests to store boots and other walking gear if needed.

The Property

On entering you are greeted by a large Lowry-esque picture of Blenkinsopp Castle where the owner's father was raised.  To your left is the entrance to the Cinema/Games room, the utility room and a large shower/wet room.  To your right is the extensive dining, kitchen and sitting space.

Dining area

The dining area is separated from the living space by large sandstone arches and boasts floor to ceiling windows which show the fabulous views across the valley.  There is a large, extendable dining table with seating for up to 14 guests.

Living space

Living space with ample comfortable seating, a large and dramatic wall-hanging and some modern sculptures and pictures be friends of the owners.

The striking red kitchen has a peninsula island with breakfast bar seating for 4, integrated dishwasher, fridge and freezer. Built-in electric fan oven and grill, four ring induction hob and built in microwave and oven combi.

Cinema and games room

To the left of the front door is a small hall which leads to the cinema and games room.  This boasts a large (3m x 1.7m) cinema screen for watching streamed movies, DVD's or TV.  This converted barn is lit by two huge industrial lights and by LED lights in each of the many arrow slit windows.

There is a table tennis table with ample space around it, an electric piano and a reflecting telescope for your use.

Bedroom one

A hallway leads off the open plan space.  The first bedroom, the "Elephant room" has a king sized double bed, a small storage cabinet hanging hook and a window seat.  It is decorated with luxurious wallpaper depicting many elephants!  There is an en suite bathroom with a generous (1800mm) bath with shower, heated towel rail, basin and WC.  Note that there is no door to the bathroom, but the layout does provide some privacy.

Bedroom two

The Green Bedroom has twin 3' beds, a small chest of drawers, a hanging hook and two chairs.  Four steps down lead to the en suite bathroom with large shower, heated towel rail, basin, and WC.  The en suite bathroom does not have a door.

Bedroom three

The last bedroom, the "Sunderland room" is at the end of the corridor and down six steps.  This has twin beds, a chest of drawers, a wardrobe and hanging hook.  There is an en suite bathroom with a large shower, basin, heated towel rail and WC.  There is no door to the bathroom, but the layout does provide privacy.

There is a gravelled courtyard which runs the length of the house and provide views across Walltown and Fell End farms and beyond that to the North Pennine Hills.  At the end is a hot tub with room for 6.  In the summer there is a gas barbeque and garden furniture for 8 to 10 guests.

You can park two or three cars inside the courtyard and two or three outside the courtyard.  We rather think that parking in the courtyard spoils the view, but it's your choice!

Electric Vehicle charging

There is an external 13 Amp socket that can be used on request for charging of EV's.  There is an additional charge of £30 for a short break and £60 for a full week.

Working farm

The Byre is at the heart of a working farm.  On no account must children (or adults) venture into the farmyard behind the house, where there are numerous hazards including, from time to time, moving farm vehicles which are typical of a working stock farm.

Towels, bed linen and bathrobes are provided for all guests.  Additional towels and slippers are provided for hot tub users.  A travel cot and high chair can be provided on request.

There is underfloor heating throughout the property (oil fired). There is an electric heater in the living area. Being a new conversion to modern high insulation standards, the Byre is warm in all weathers.

Wi-fi coverage is pretty good (10Mb+) and mobile coverage is good for most providers.

Up to two dogs are welcome with an additional charge of £25 per dog.  We will consider further dogs on request.  Please do not allow dogs on the furniture or in bedrooms.

You are in the middle of a working farm, so dogs must be kept on leads.  Please take care when walking through fields with cattle and give them a very wide berth if they have calves.  Likewise keep a good distance from sheep with lambs.

Further Accommodation

For larger gatherings, you can book Walltown Farm Cottage (sleeps 6/8) and is 2 minutes walk away.  And/or you can book Lowtown Cottage (sleeps 4) and is 7 minutes' walk away (2 minute drive).  You can even book Fell End (sleeps 8/12) which is a 25 minute walk or 7 minute drive away.

March 2022

Celebrated my 60th birthday here with my family.  This house is fabulous from cosy beds to eclectic furniture to nights in the cinema room and daily dips in the hot tub.  I had the best birthday ever + a private chef on the Saturday to make it perfect.  Loved exploring the area.  Can't wait to return to this special place.  Thanks so much.

Fabulous house, comfy beds, great scenery.  We loved the cinema room and all of the house's amenities.  A visit to Vindolanda is recommended, a great experience.  We loved our stay at Walltown Byre and are sad to leave.
