This family base has been recently refurbished into a modern and comfortable living space over three floors.  It is about as close to Hadrian's wall as you want to get, enclosed in the quiet embrace of a large Northumbrian hill farm in the Westernmost corner of the Northumberland National Park.

Owner Sabina Forwood has employed lots of colour and eclectic works of art to bring vibrancy and fun to this property just as she has with the other three Walltown holiday let properties.

The ground floor living space is generous with high ceilings and with a range of works of art.  Pride of place is the large oil painting "The Love Letter" which used to hang in the dining room of Sabina's family home.

The property is well insulated with modern underfloor heating, but the sitting room has a big log burning stove if you want to have toastie comfort after a long day's walking on a bracing winter's afternoon.

The property very comfortably sleeps six, but the upstairs sitting easily converts into another double bedroom.  If not used for sleeping, this upstairs room provides great family space if some of the party want to escape and play cards or watch something better on TV.

The first floor bedrooms face south and enjoy the morning sun which lights up Sabina's colours, floral prints and bold soft furnishings.

The master bedroom is almost baronial in size with a super king bed with a purple bedhead which matches the two armchairs in the room.  For a bit of contrast, the nextdoor bathroom is blessed with a picture of Blondie in her prime.

The property is close to the village of Greenhead and under 15 minutes' drive from Haltwhistle (for your supplies).  Hadrian's wall is 500 metres walk away.  We challenge you to run up the steps to the Roman Fort looking North to Kielder Forest and Scotland before breakfast to perk up your appetite (20 minute round trip for youngsters).  The remains of 12th-century Thirlwall Castle is in easy walking distance and is very evocative of the Rievers (border raiders) in defence of which it was constructed.

There is much to see and visit when you do not feel inclined to walk.  Visits to Hexham and Brampton are a must with great shops and restaurants, and in Hexham, the historic Abbey.  Browse some antique shops if Sabina's collection has given you some inspiration!

The Property

The entrance to Walltown Farm Cottage is through a large porch to the rear. The porch has large built-in cupboards for coats, a coat rack and seat with shoe/boot storage.

The kitchen is off a small entrance hall. The kitchen is well equipped with a large free standing fridge freezer, a generous sized cooker and 5 ring hob.  There is a stripped pine dresser/sideboard and a kitchen table with four chairs.

Downstairs sitting room

The sitting room is at the front of the house, looking out over stone walls and fields.  It has a  log-burner (wood is supplied) set in an impressive stone fireplace.  There is a four-seat sofa and two armchairs.  The dining space has a dining table seating eight guests. There are display shelves with eclectic objets d'art and some striking pictures, including a large oil painting, "The Love Letter".   There is a 43" smart TV.

Upstairs sitting room

Upstairs there is another generous sized sitting room with another smart TV.  This has a three-seat sofa, a window seat, a round dining table with four chairs and a sideboard with another smart TV.  This room also has a kitchenette area with a fridge with freezer compartment, a 2-ring induction hob, a microwave/combi oven, a toaster, kettle, and sink.

The sofa can be converted into a double bed on request.

Bedroom one

This bedroom has a king size double bed which can be split into 2’6” twins upon request.  The room is south facing and has bedside tables and lamps, a dressing table, and armchair. There is built in storage in the passage outside, shared with bedroom two.

Bedroom two

Bedroom two has 3’ twins which can be put together into a super king bed upon request, with bedside table and lamp, dressing table with mirror, storage bench seats, and stool with lamp.  This room is also South facing.

These two bedrooms share a family bathroom which has a bath with shower, basin with illuminated mirror, heated towel rail and WC.  The bathroom has a view to the West of Hadrian's Wall climbing up to a Roman Fort.

Bedroom three

This is the master bedroom on the top floor and has a super king sized bed with a 3' single bed suitable for a child.  This room is large with exposed beams and sloping ceilings.  Other furniture includes bedside tables and lamps, dressing table, storage chest, desk and chair, two armchairs, footstool, hooks and hangers.  The room has velux windows with no coverings.  Eye masks are provided for light sleeping guests.

Bathroom two

This is a family bathroom on the top floor next to bedroom three.  This has a bath with shower, heated towel rail, basin with illuminated mirror and WC.

There is a small utility room off the entrance hall with a clothes washing machine and drier, a basin and a WC.

Towels, bed linen and bathrobes are provided for all guests.

There is underfloor heating downstairs and radiators upstairs (oil fired). There is a log burner in the downstairs sitting room. Being a new conversion to modern high insulation standards, the cotage is warm in all weathers.

Wi-fi is pretty good (10Mb+) and mobile coverage is good for most providers.

A bistro table and chairs is provided outside in summer months.

Up to two dogs are welcome with an additional charge of £25 per dog.  We will consider further dogs on request.  Please do not allow dogs on the furniture or in bedrooms.

You are in the middle of a working farm, so dogs must be kept on leads.  Please take care when walking through fields with cattle and give them a very wide berth if they have calves.  Likewise keep a good distance from sheep with lambs.

There is ample space to park three cars.

Absolutely perfect location for a weekend stay near Hadrian’s Wall, perfect for walking or as a base to explore the area. The accommodation has had a lot of thought and care put into the decor and quality of the furnishings, the bed in particular is out of this world! A truly beautiful secluded location just a few minutes walk from the Wall itself. We had a really friendly welcome and no problems during our stay.

Mark - August 2022

We really had a great time on our visit, our 1 year old loved looking out the floor level windows and the location was perfect for us. There were beautiful trails right outside the house, no need to pack him in the car. We enjoyed taking long walks along the wall to local pubs.  Well equipped for a several day stay.

Gilly - August 2022

My 12 year old son and I had a lovely stay.  The area and apartment is beautiful and our hosts were friendly, nice people. They were happy to offer tips about places to visit and best times to get there, and the apartment has a list of things to do and places to go. The location is absolutely fabulous and we loved doing the short hike up to Hadrian’s Wall in the evenings to watch the sun set. The nearby Milecastle Inn was a lovely place to eat and had a vegan option for Sunday lunch, which was very tasty.

Stephi - July 2022

We loved our stay. The location was excellent and the house was beautifully decorated. Check-in was easy and we were offered help with anything we needed on arrival which was great. The sofa bed in the living room area was really comfy.

Lovely apartment in a great location -peaceful, beautiful and perfect for Hadrian’s wall.

James - June 2022

We had a fabulous stay in a wonderful location with some of the best parts of Hadrian’s Wall on the doorstep.  The property is much bigger than we expected and very stylish, clean and comfortable.   The location couldn’t be better for exploring the beautiful Northumberland countryside and its Roman history.  It is lovely and remote, but Haltwhistle with a wide range of shops is minutes away by car.  We also had a great day trip to the Solway.  We will be back!

Suzanne - May 2022

Fantastic accommodation with wonderful scenery. Great walks all around. Definitely visiting again

A beautiful spot with Hadrian's Wall and great views just behind.

Amy - July 2021

Stayed for 1 night on the way back from a trip to Edinburgh. The property is absolutely beautiful, much bigger than we expected and in such a wonderful location.  If you like stunning views and countryside walks it doesn't get much better than this, the location really is amazing. The decor inside the property was the icing on the cake, so quirky and tastefully done! Thank you for an wonderful stay.

Absolutely fantastic stay in a wonderful location and property which was just perfect.

With Hadrian’s wall on the doorstep and stunning views all around, this property is a real gem!! The property really is almost on top of the Wall…

There is definitely plenty to see and do locally from the wall, museums, walking, eating and swimming in the Tyne!

The pictures do not disappoint as the property is presented perfectly with a really welcoming and comfortable high standard, finish. It has all the fittings, fixtures and appliances to allow you to get away and live self sufficient while enjoying time out from world and enjoying the wonderful surroundings. We highly recommend and definitely hope to visit again..!! In fact we will return!!

Set in idyllic countryside with breathtaking scenery right on your doorstep, we had a wonderful few days here. The accommodation is modern, spacious and comfortable with great views from the bedroom upstairs.  Location is great for exploring the beautiful Northumbrian countryside and we did a day trip to Newcastle too.

David - July 2021

A house on a hillside with views over glorious deep countryside. Sheep and cows in the fields. One lives in superb comfort in the excellently renovated and well decorated property. True rural peace and a wonderfully convenient location for exploring some of the best parts of Hadrian’s Wall. There were useful notes and maps in the apartment.  We had no idea we would be so lucky as to find ourselves in such a place.

Two PSs:
despite being in the deepest countryside, this is a slight illusion as the nice little town of Haltwhistle is just minutes away by car for shops and supplies (we used Sainsbury’s);
Believe your GPS: it does take you to destination even if the last mile is down a single track road, over cattle grids, and seemingly back a century!

Andie - July 2021

Had a great stay.  The accommodation is well decorated and has everything you could need - including beautiful views (and walks)! We would recommend this stay and hope to return for another staycation soon.

Richard - June 2021
